Tour de Glug Winner – Raph Campos

2010-07-28T08:59:22Z by Nick Clement

Following his nasty accident on the Glug – Tour de Brighton, where Raph Campos split his cycle helmet with the force of his impact with the tarmac (cautionary tale – always wear your helmet!!) Source, the sponsors of the Glug events, thought it would be nice to all chip in and get him vouchers towards a new one! In the picture, Raph is presented his £50 Cycle Surgery vouchers by Jonathan Lindon and Ollie Williams. Glad to see the face is healing Raph!

D&AD Sharp’ner – Design & Advertising in Music

2010-07-19T14:11:40Z by Jonathan

Wednesday 21 July – Design & Advertising in Music

D&AD is launching a new series of small events for members and friends, Sharp’ner offers an opportunity for stimulating discussion and the exchange of ideas around some really great projects…. in a bar.

We’ll be working around a loose theme for each event, interesting people will be invited to talk and there will be some lovely things to look at. We want the events to be a two-way discussion and will encourage everyone to contribute ideas for future evenings.

The second of our Sharp’ners ventures into the world of music creation and promotion. Steve Milbourne and Phil Clandillon of Sony Music Creative talk about new and innovative ways to advertise, Kate Moross, pioneer of ISO on recent projects, Paula Benson of Design Agency Form discusses the changing role of design in music and Sean Bidder of The Vinyl Factory shows how they are bridging the gap between music and art.

Chaired by Patrick Burgoyne, Editor of Creative Review, things will kick off at 7 with a selection of D&AD Award-winning music videos on view till late.

Members – Free | Non-members – £5.00

Tickets available at www.dandad.org/sharpner or on the door.

Glug London to Brighton

2010-07-19T08:51:07Z by Jonathan

On Friday, the most important cycling event of the summer began: the ‘Tour De Glug’. 60 cyclists from various backgrounds embarked on a 53-mile ride from London to Brighton. The scorching sun made the journey more taxing than usual on the riders and this did affect progress, but the day was a great success with everyone arriving in Brighton in one piece… just about!

We began from Farringdon Road outside the Glug/Studio Output HQ and collected more people at Clapham South, as a sea of green took over central London on a cycle revolution. There was a great sense of community amongst the riders and, although we took many a wrong turn along the route, we all ended up meeting at various snack stops along the way. Ian took the most unfortunate of wrong turns and ended up cycling along the M23.

The bikes were of varying quality and well done to anyone who attempted this ride on a single speed. I am pleased to report that my 1982 Peugeot Speed 10 did survive the ride, although it only had two working gears by the end!

The majority of the riders missed the talks at the Glug Brighton event as we arrived just a little too late, but I think I can speak for everyone when I say we were just glad to get there! We also raised over £400 for Shelter along the way so the pain was worth it.

The coveted orange Jersey was awarded to Raphael Campos from Glue Isobar; he took a tumble on the early stages that would have halted most, but proved he was made of sterner stuff and has the battle scars to prove it. He ventured on to Brighton ignoring any signs of pain and earning the right to wear the orange jersey.

Thanks to all that rode, thanks to all that talked at Brighton and special thanks to all those that came down for beers.

Dear Glugger – Fancy a jolly boys/girls outing down to Brighton Beach this Friday ??!!

It’s looking like it’s going to be another hot and sunny Glug this Friday. But we still have some tickets left for people travelling down from London so here’s a bit more information for you as well as details where you can get trains, buy tickets and stay over (if you want to).

So far we’ve got over 300 people attending but are looking to sell the last 150 tickets allocated for Glug London. The event starts from 6pm and goes on till late with speakers Airside, Conran Design and Mainframe! As well as this we’ve also got live illustration, some cool interactive stuff and a host of dj’s for you.

In response to feedback on the meetup we’ve decided to drop the ticket price for this event down to £4 and losing the free networking drink token for each ticket. Obviously for those who’ve bought a ticket already they won’t be effected. We’ll also be selling the tokens on the door to people as they arrive so you can then buy these at your leisure.

Travel:
If you want to ride down there are still a few places (see below) but if not you can get a train direct from a host of London stations. London Bridge, Farringdon and Victoria for around £15.

We appreciate the extra effort people travelling from London are making so if you bring along your train ticket we’ll give you some extra drinks tokens to say thanks for your efforts! ;-)

Hotels:
For those of you who want to stay the night in Brighton there are a couple of links below to hotels that are quite close to the venue. (If you are planning to stay in any of these, try and book in advance)

These hotels are really near the venue.

The Bike Ride:
We’ve got over 60 people now committed to our special charity bike ride. If you’d like to join us for this, there are still some places but be warned these are £10 each, they do include some drinks tokens, entry to the event and a very special Tour De Glug t-shirt!

New Sponsor – Source Personnel

2010-07-02T16:30:50Z by Nick Clement

We just wanted to make you aware of a new Glug development as a new sponsorship deal for 2010/11 with creative recruitment agency Source.

No doubt you’re thinking, how does that effect us? Well due to the not for profit nature of how we operate Glug we’ll be able to put on larger and more varied events. We’re yet to tie down exactly how the sponsorship will be spent but this will largely be split across, lots of free drink (glug, glug!), lots of free food (yum, yum!) lots of cool giveaways (yes, yes!) and of course making glug better. We’ll also be asking you what you’d like to get from Glug this year and what you’d like us to do to keep moving thing forward. Feel free to post ideas on the meetup.

We’re also really pleased that Jon, Annika and their team at Source seem to want to be involved for all the right reasons. I get the impression for them they feel it’s a good opportunity to give something back to the design community and hopefully add some real value to these events. So without further ado, here’s a word from our new sponsors:

“We’re really excited to be working with the Glug team and can’t wait to get involved with all of the ‘notworking’ events. We hope to be able to support not only the events, but also any Gluggers that might be able to utilise our experience and knowledge to their advantage.’

– Source.

Welcome aboard the now even sturdier ship Glug guys!

Notworking™ – D&AD + Glug

2010-07-02T16:02:44Z by Nick Clement

D&AD + Glug Student Awards Recap.

So we hosted the official after party for the D&AD Student Awards. So much talent in one place! Paul from Generation Press did a cracking job on printing the Kings and Queens Drinks Cards for us. The idea was to encourage a little networking you had to match a King with a Queen of the same colour with someone in the crowd, you then hooked up with that person for a free beer. We’ve had some great feedback and they went down a treat. So we’ll be running this idea and a set of stickers in future to help with the introductions a bit more.

Big thanks to D&AD and the Vibe Bar for letting us host the night and to all the agencies that gave up their time to speak to The Gluggers and D&AD Students, hopefully we’ve helped share some love and maybe helped you get that first or new job.

Agencies: Saint, Glue Isobar, Wyld Stallyons, Studio Output, 300 Million, NotToScale

Illustrators: Pomme ChanAllan DeasMatt Stokes and the wonderful Agency Rush.
